Who's Pulling Your Wallet Strings?

Spotting the Influence Game Behind Every Purchase

Influence Detector

Badge to earn: Influence Detector

You can now name the plays being run on your wallet, which is the first step to deciding which ones you'll let work on you.

The Big Question

When you buy something, is it because YOU wanted it, or because someone made you want it?

What you'll be able to do by the end

  • Identify the 5 most common influence tactics used on teen spenders.
  • Track your own spending triggers across a week of real life.
  • Build a 3-second pause habit that filters 'want' from 'need to have.'

Block 1 · The Hook

Start noticing, not stopping

Captions on · ~60–90 seconds

A 60–90 second look at how 90% of your spending decisions aren't actually yours. (Video loads here in the live course.)

Block 2 · Where You Stand

Three quick questions. No wrong answers. Your responses become a benchmark for your own growth across this course.

0 of 3 answered · no wrong answers
1K — Know

What's the last thing you bought because you saw it online? Be honest with yourself. (1–2 sentences)

2W — Want to know

What's one influence trick you've noticed but never knew the name for? (1 sentence)

3R — Relates to your life

Whose money habits in your circle of friends or family do you trust the most, and what do they do differently? (1–2 sentences)

Block 3 · The Vocab Drop

Block 4 · The Lesson

Every ad, every influencer, every storefront, every TikTok product placement, every Instagram swipe-up, they're all running plays from the same playbook. Once you know the plays, the game looks completely different.

The 5 plays you'll see every single day

Play #1 · Scarcity

'Only 3 left in stock!' · 'Sale ends tonight!' · 'This drop won't restock.' What it does: triggers fear of missing out, which short-circuits your decision-making. Your brain skips the 'do I even want this?' step.

How to spot it

Any phrase about time running out or stock running low.

Play #2 · Social Proof

'5-star rating from 10,000 buyers!' · 'Everyone's wearing it.' · Influencer carries it everywhere. What it does: tells your brain it's safe to buy because other people did. Crowds feel less risky than solo decisions.

How to spot it

When the pitch is more about WHO buys it than WHAT it does.

Play #3 · Anchor Pricing

'Was $89, now $39!' · 'Save 60%, today only!' What it does: makes the new price feel like a steal, even if the 'original' price was inflated.

How to spot it

Any sale that puts a higher number next to a lower one. Ask yourself: would I pay $39 for this if there was no $89 next to it?

Play #4 · Emotional Hooks

Ads that show you the LIFE you'll have if you buy. The friends. The confidence. The vibe. What it does: ties the product to a feeling you want. You're not buying the product, you're buying the feeling, except the feeling doesn't actually come in the box.

How to spot it

The ad spends more time on people's faces and lifestyles than on the actual product features.

Play #5 · Frictionless Checkout

Apple Pay. Saved cards. One-tap buy. 'Buy Now Pay Later in 4 payments of $25.' What it does: removes the brief moment where you'd normally STOP and ask yourself if you really want it. Friction is your friend. Apps killed friction.

How to spot it

Any purchase you can complete in under 3 seconds.

The 3-second pause habit

This is the single highest-ROI habit in this entire course. Before you buy ANYTHING that isn't food or fuel, count three seconds. In those three seconds, ask yourself one question:

The question

'If I close this app right now and the urge to buy is gone in an hour, was it ever really mine?'

Three seconds isn't a lot. But it's exactly enough time to break the play. Almost every 'I shouldn't have bought that' purchase happens because someone skipped those three seconds. You can't buy back the impulse buys. You CAN start counting.

“Too many people buy things they don't need with money they don't have to impress people they don't even like.”
— Dave Ramsey

Sit with this: What was the last purchase you made that you regretted within a week, and which of the 5 plays got you?

Block 5 · Real Talk Scenario

Meet Ava. Ava is 18 and just graduated. Last Saturday she opened TikTok and saw a creator (1.2 million followers) reviewing a 'life-changing' skincare bundle. The creator had glowing skin. The video had 380,000 likes. The brand had a 'flash sale, 24 hours only.' Bundle price: $70.

Ava bought it. Two minutes from 'see' to 'checkout' using Apple Pay. Three weeks later, her skin is exactly the same. The bundle is half-used and sitting on a shelf. The creator already posted three new skincare videos for three different brands.

Here's what got Ava, and notice how the plays stacked:

  • Social proof: 1.2M followers, 380K likes ('if everyone says it's good…')
  • Scarcity: 24-hour flash sale ('I have to decide NOW')
  • Emotional hook: glowing skin = the feeling of being put-together
  • Frictionless: Apple Pay = $70 gone before she could second-guess

The actual lesson

Ava didn't make a stupid decision. She made a fast one. There's a difference. The whole system was designed to make her decide before she could think.

Quick reflection (not graded): When was the LAST time you made a fast money decision instead of a slow one? Don't judge yourself, just notice it.

Block 6 · Build It — Pick Your Path

This is where you make the lesson land. Pick ONE of the two paths below. Both submit. Both earn full credit toward your badge.

Template provided as: (1) fillable PDF download, (2) Google Doc copy, (3) editable in-platform text submission. Pick whichever format works for you.

Block 7 · Self-Check

5 questions. Pass at 70%. Wrong answers come with an explainer, not just 'incorrect.' Retake as many times as you want.

Remember

FOMO stands for…

Block 8 · The Pledge

Your behavior commitment for the next 7 days. This is what turns knowledge into action.

Block 8 · The Pledge

Your 7-day commitment

Finish the sentence below. Make it specific enough that you'll know whether you did it.

In the next 7 days, I will ________________________.

Examples (don't copy — write your own)

  • use the 3-second pause on every non-food purchase and notice what happens.
  • unfollow 5 accounts whose content makes me want to spend.
  • turn off one-tap payment on at least one app (add the friction back).
  • keep a notes-app list of every purchase I almost made and didn't.

Badge unlocked: Influence Detector

You can now name the plays being run on your wallet, which is the first step to deciding which ones you'll let work on you. This badge is awarded automatically when all 8 blocks are complete, the Self-Check is passed (70%+), and your Pledge is submitted.
